Trump rejects Iran’s conditional plan to reopen Strait of Hormuz

Donald Trump rejected Iran’s Strait of Hormuz plan, saying Tehran wanted an immediate reopening. AP reported Iran would reopen the strait within seven days if the US lifted its naval blockade of Iranian ports and oil sanctions and agreed to a ceasefire including Lebanon.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the seven-day clock would begin once the US agreed: initial steps would take four to five days, the Strait would reopen on day six, and nuclear negotiations would start on day seven. Iran’s plan closely resembled a June memorandum of understanding, which allowed 60 days to reach a final deal.

President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran would honor its commitments if Washington accepted the proposal. US officials described mediated discussions as positive and constructive, said nuclear issues remained under discussion and said the US would not rush a deal. The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, reported that Trump told aides he expected to resume a bombing campaign against Iran after the November midterm elections.
