Pennsylvania reported 68 new measles infections since Sept. 23, bringing its outbreak total to 903 on Monday, Sept. 28. The state said 176 patients had been hospitalized, up from 164 on Sept. 23; Lancaster County remains the hardest-hit area.
Pennsylvania earlier this month reported four measles-related deaths among unvaccinated residents. Gov. Josh Shapiro and U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. disagreed over how many were directly caused by measles. The CDC said it was reviewing how it classifies measles deaths; its website now lists one verified death but does not say where it occurred.
The United States had recorded 3,659 measles cases as of Sept. 24, according to CDC data. The article says two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine provide 97% protection.
