An Ohio Democrat proposed redirecting the $600 million grant for the Browns’ new stadium to the state transportation department. Both major Ohio gubernatorial candidates have also proposed a gas-tax holiday; a judge blocked the grant’s transfer in December 2025.
The grant was approved in summer 2025 using money from Ohio’s Division of Unclaimed Funds, a pool that includes forgotten bank accounts, utility deposits and uncashed checks. The state gas tax typically funds road repairs and other transportation projects.
The Browns have broken ground on their Brook Park stadium, which is planned to open for the 2029 season. The team continues to play at Huntington Bank Field.
