Jayquan Morton, an off-duty Danville police officer, was arrested without incident after Virginia State Police charged him in a shooting that damaged a sedan carrying two people on Sept. 20. Neither was hit; investigators say shots came from a silver SUV.
State police say the charges include two counts of attempted malicious wounding, shooting into an occupied vehicle, using a firearm in a felony, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, reckless handling of a firearm and firing within city limits. Investigators say the SUV sped up behind the sedan before shots were fired from it. Police said Morton knew one victim but gave no details about their relationship or a possible motive. The investigation remains active.
Morton will be placed on leave without pay pending further administrative action, Danville police said. The department said the process is separate from the criminal case and announced no final employment decision. The charges are accusations, not a conviction.
