A Newsweek comparison using BLS data found all nine everyday goods averaged lower nominal prices under Joe Biden than during Donald Trump’s second term, countering Trump’s claim that almost all goods now cost less. Sticker-price comparisons do not account for inflation.
The basket covered beef, eggs, bread, milk, bananas, tomatoes, chicken, bacon and coffee. Beef and coffee saw some of the largest gains in Trump’s second term, while egg prices fell more than 50% since his return in January 2025; eggs had tripled from January 2021 to January 2025.
The Consumer Price Index rose around 28% overall since January 2021. The report says products whose prices rose by less than that were cheaper in real terms after accounting for broader inflation.
