The Supreme Court lifted a block on states using Social Security data in DHS’s SAVE system to check voter eligibility. Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, saying the court favored Trump’s administration over voters; registered voters could not be removed from state rolls in time.
The lower court had blocked the updated system over concerns that Social Security Administration citizenship data were often outdated. Jackson’s dissent, joined by Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, argued that burdening or disenfranchising even a few lawful voters outweighed what she called the government’s “nonexistent harm.” She said the decision came without a full hearing and called the majority’s assessment “back of the napkin.”
