A Santa Fe jury found on Sept. 25 that Meta misled New Mexico residents about Facebook’s handling of their personal information after a two-week trial. The state filed suit in 2021; damages have not been set. Separately, Meta shares fell 3.33% to close at $751.66.
The case was set against reports that Cambridge Analytica had harvested Facebook users’ personal data without their knowledge. New Mexico argued Meta described its privacy practices one way while permitting something different behind the interface—not that information had leaked. The jury agreed.
Meta also agreed earlier this year to a separate $17 billion settlement over claims involving teenage users, according to the article.
