Macedonia Baptist Church in Cape May received an official New Jersey Black Heritage Trail marker, unveiled at a community ceremony June 18. It recognizes the church’s generations-long role as a spiritual, cultural and civic center for Black residents.
Founded in the early 1900s, the church has hosted civil rights meetings, youth programs and community celebrations. The New Jersey Historical Commission said it advocated for congregants’ rights against displacement during 1960s urban-renewal campaigns.
The church stands next to the Harriet Tubman Museum; Tubman lived and worked in Cape May during the 1850s, raising funds for her Underground Railroad missions. The state trail is administered by the New Jersey Historical Commission and has other markers in Atlantic City, Camden, Newark and Trenton.
