Washington Nationals pitcher Connelly Early returned to a big-league mound after three months away, throwing three scoreless innings against the Mets and allowing one hit while striking out one. Still rebuilding after an injury absence, he was on a pitch count.
Early said his pitches were “alright” and their shapes were in a good spot, but his command needed work. He said he could have used his fastball more effectively at the top of the zone.
Early finished his rookie season with a 3.33 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 94.1 innings, despite missing time with an injury. He said he wants to stay durable and complete a full MLB season next year; Blake Butera said adding muscle could help him gain velocity.
