Nearly 1.5 million people are internally displaced in Haiti, and almost 80% are outside Port-au-Prince, the International Organization for Migration said in a Friday report. Recent attacks in Kenscoff near the capital displaced more than 4,000 people.
Artibonite saw the sharpest recent increase in displacement from May to August 2026 as insecurity escalated and safe options narrowed. The department had been considered a refuge for families fleeing violence elsewhere. The report said armed gangs have near-total control of Port-au-Prince and are expanding into rural areas.
Hundreds of thousands of displaced people are living in informal settlements, collective sites or other precarious conditions, increasing their vulnerability during the Atlantic hurricane season, IOM said. IOM Haiti Senior Emergency Coordinator Elise Verron said a major storm could trigger another humanitarian emergency for families already displaced.
