At a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi Britain would not tolerate intimidation, threats or hostile activity on UK soil. He urged Iran to de-escalate and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Miliband also raised the detention of Craig and Lindsay Foreman, a British couple arrested in Iran in January last year while on a motorcycle trip. They were sentenced to 10 years in prison on spying charges and are held at Evin prison; both deny the allegations. He renewed his call for their immediate release, saying their welfare remained a government priority.
In April this year, two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green. HAYI claimed responsibility, but investigators said there was no initial evidence linking the Iranian state to the attack and suggested the claim was opportunistic. HAYI’s claims over other UK attacks, including the firebombing of four ambulances belonging to a Jewish-run charity, have not been substantiated. In July, Iran’s IRGC threatened to attack RAF Fairford.
