Dozens of anti-China protesters chanted “Free Hong Kong” and “Free Tibet” outside the White House as Donald Trump and Xi Jinping posed for photos before their state dinner Thursday. One protester also shouted what sounded like an insult at Melania Trump.
Xi said the U.S. and China should avoid the “Thucydides trap”—a theory that rivalry between a rising and established power can spiral into war—and called for peaceful coexistence with U.S. competition kept “within bounds.” The article says it was his second such warning in four months; Trump called Xi a “truly great friend.”
CNN, MS NOW and Politico were denied access to cover the dinner arrivals, although their White House access had been reinstated earlier that day in compliance with a federal judge’s ruling. CNN reporter Kristen Holmes said the White House limited their invitation to camera and audio, with no editorial presence, and said it was not a credential for the dinner.
