Michigan nurse Kieran Ansley is charged with multiple counts of child abuse after a premature 4-month-old girl at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital was found with broken bones and bruises. Ansley was fired, released on bond and is expected in court Nov. 10.
Court records say the girl's mother visited on April 2 and noticed a blue-black tongue and bruises she said had not been present the previous night. Ansley allegedly hurried to intercept the family and said the infant had slept through the night; records say she described the marks as something she had seen before and “not a big deal.” A hospital log recorded 32 entries into the room that night, 27 attributed to Ansley.
The girl was born at 23 weeks weighing 1 pound, 1 ounce, spent months in intensive care and was expected to go home in April before the reported injuries. Now 10 months old and at home, she is “doing wonderful,” her grandfather said. Ansley's attorney, Damian Nunzio, said she had cooperated with the investigation, had years of ICU experience and was a “very good person,” adding that he was confident the investigation would reveal the truth.
