New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani introduced a 10-year street-safety roadmap calling for lower speed limits near more schools, yearly safety upgrades at 1,000 intersections and tougher enforcement targeting repeat speeders and cars with ghost plates.
The proposal, called “Vision Zero Reimagined,” was presented at a Sept. 15 launch event as a roadmap with about 100 policy commitments. It also calls for more pedestrian-only spaces and builds on the city’s earlier Vision Zero framework under former Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Ghost plates” are obscured or altered plates used to evade enforcement.
Transportation Alternatives said 99 people, including cyclists, were killed in traffic collisions in the first half of 2026; its executive director Ben Furnas attended the announcement. Crash victims’ relatives also joined Mamdani, including the Lao family, whose 3-year-old daughter Alison was killed by a distracted driver in 2013. One motorist interviewed by ABC7 supported giving pedestrians and cyclists priority over vehicles; ABC7 noted some drivers may worry added restrictions could worsen congestion.
