James Copenhaver, 76, seriously wounded in the 2024 Trump assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally, died Wednesday, his family said. The medical examiner did not disclose a cause; a lawyer declined to say whether his injuries contributed, citing pending litigation.
Copenhaver was one of two rallygoers seriously injured when a gunman opened fire in Butler on July 13, 2024; attendee Corey Comperatore was killed. Copenhaver was hospitalized in critical but stable condition and released about two weeks later. He later told KDKA that one bullet tore into his triceps, another remained lodged in his body, and he had nerve damage; he used a cane.
In June, Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne, sued the federal government, alleging negligence, recklessness or carelessness by the Secret Service in the shooting. The case is ongoing. Earlier this month, both sides agreed to give the government more time to respond; CNN said it had sought comment from the Justice Department.
