Michigan scored only on Bryce Underwood’s 1-yard run before the final play; Western Michigan’s Dieter Kelly hit four field goals, including one with 35 seconds left that put his team ahead 12-7. Officials restored a second after reviewing the clock, and Underwood found JJ Buchanan for a 47-yard touchdown. The MAC said the wrong clock feed was used and the required feed would have meant no extra play. The NCAA confirmed protocol was not followed and said the outcome would have differed, but rules bar changing the result after the referee declares the game over.
On The Triple Option, Meyer said Michigan “didn’t beat Western Michigan,” and Ingram agreed: “They lost.” Ingram argued that programs with a culture of national titles should “act like they’ve been there before.” Coach Kyle Whittingham said there was little celebration in the locker room and acknowledged the team had many deficiencies to fix.
