Meta will let smart-glasses users opt out of using camera-based Meta AI interactions to train its models. The company says opted-out visuals can still be processed to answer a request, then are discarded, and won’t be shown to third-party contractors in other countries.
Meta distinguishes these camera-based requests from ordinary photos taken with the glasses: it has said those photos are not shared or used for training. Images and videos captured while using Meta AI, such as asking what a sign means, were stored and could be used for training. An earlier report said some overseas contractors reviewing and labeling such material had reported seeing personal, intimate images.
The opt-out covers visual data only. Audio interactions with Meta AI remain eligible for training and review, though Meta allows users to manually delete those recordings.
