Former Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady says he loved five years at the club despite two relegations and Wembley defeats. He recalled his Portsmouth equaliser in the 2019 Checkatrade Trophy final; Sunderland later won the 2020 Papa John’s Trophy final behind closed doors.
McGeady joined Sunderland in July 2017 after its Premier League relegation and stayed through the drop into League One. He scored 35 goals and made 36 assists for the club. He said Sunderland should not have been relegated again and believed the team should have secured promotion under Jack Ross.
McGeady’s late equaliser against Portsmouth sent the 2019 final to penalties, where Sunderland lost. The club also lost the League One play-off final before its 2020 Papa John’s Trophy win; that final was played without fans because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
