The NFL said the gesture violated its unsportsmanlike-conduct rule, describing Goncalves’s imitation of chugging beer as an offensive demonstration “in poor taste.” The fine notice warned that further offenses could bring escalating discipline, up to suspension.
That same week, 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk received a $14,926 fine for a nearly identical routine. He said it represented drinking juice, not beer, and appealed; his hearing was set for Tuesday via Zoom.
