Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he had signed a pardon for Mary Jane Veloso, who is serving a prison sentence in the Philippines after her 2024 transfer from Indonesia. She was sentenced to death for drug trafficking and received a last-minute reprieve in 2015.
The 2024 transfer followed a deal between Manila and Jakarta under which the Philippines agreed to respect Veloso’s sentence and prisoner status. Indonesian authorities said any clemency decision after the transfer would be Marcos’s.
Veloso was arrested in Yogyakarta in 2010 after authorities found 2.6 kg (5.7 lb) of heroin concealed in a suitcase. She said she was an unwitting drug mule.
