Subpoenaed Mar-a-Lago FBI agents asked Judge Aileen Cannon if they may testify before a grand jury or consult lawyers in a probe into whether former officials conspired to deprive Donald Trump of his rights. Cannon’s disclosure limits leave them unsure what they can say.
According to their filing, Cannon restricted disclosure of special counsel Jack Smith’s report and related nonpublic information. The agents said sharing material covered by the order could expose them to contempt; their attorneys said failing to provide what the grand jury requested could also bring legal trouble.
Subpoenas have also gone to officials involved in past investigations of Trump; former CIA Director John Brennan’s lawyers confirmed he was subpoenaed. A former FBI supervisor from the 2016 Russia investigation was interviewed and given immunity by prosecutors. After Joe diGenova resigned as the probe’s overseer following a dispute over its pace, U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones and deputy Yara Klukas took charge for now. Sources told CNN the team is pursuing possible individual cases against Trump’s political critics, but officials at a Florida meeting considered charges in the immediate future very unlikely.
