At the U.N. in New York, the Make Polluters Pay coalition handed U.N. climate official Selwin Hart petitions with more than 2 million signatures combined; 350.org says the total may include duplicates. It seeks enforceable rules to shift climate-damage costs to fossil fuel firms.
The coalition proposes climate-damage taxes and higher charges on fossil fuel profits. It also wants companies to help fund climate recovery, adaptation and a shift to clean, affordable renewable energy.
350.org relayed Hart’s statement that the U.N. supports the effort; he urged civil society to use legal tools including regulation, legislation and litigation. 350.org executive director Anne Jellema said, “We pay. They profit. It’s time to change that.”
