Madonna is set to open the MTV Video Music Awards tonight with 13 nominations, tying Lady Gaga’s single-year record. It will be her first VMA performance in 23 years; her last win was 27 years ago.
Madonna’s 2026 album “Confessions II,” a sequel to 2005’s “Confessions on a Dance Floor,” was a critical and commercial hit and topped the Billboard 200. The article says this made her the first artist of the 2020s to top the chart after doing so in three earlier decades.
Madonna won 20 VMAs between 1986 and 1999. The album’s visual companion, spanning its first six songs and featuring Sabrina Carpenter, Kate Moss and Benedict Cumberbatch among others, premiered at the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival and went viral online.
