National Geographic’s seven-part “Africa Earth’s Wild Home” launches its new multi-year documentary franchise, which will cover the planet one continent at a time. The series premieres Oct. 2 on Nat Geo and streams on Disney+ and Hulu beginning Oct. 3.
The seven episodes took four years to make and involved more than 50 people; filming took place in nearly 30 African countries. Wunmi Mosaku narrates and executive produces. BBC Studios Natural History Unit produced the series for National Geographic, using new technology and CGI to reveal the continent’s history and the forces that shaped its natural environments.
Nat Geo partnered with National Geographic Society Explorers and scientists and Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative. Crews sought wildlife-behavior leads from guides, drivers, photographers and residents who see wildlife daily. The series features sequences described as never filmed before, including a crocodile hunting bats in dark caves; its finale focuses on conservationists, photographers and scientists working to safeguard the continent.
