Texas counselor Kevin Curry was convicted last week of defrauding Tricare with more than $26 million in false claims for TMS services beneficiaries never received or were ineligible to receive; the program paid him $17 million, the Justice Department said.
According to the Justice Department, Curry ran three purported mental-health clinics in Texas and Florida, falsely claimed to be a doctor and used fake credentials. He directed employees to fabricate records and paid more than $5.5 million in kickbacks to get eligible beneficiaries to sign up for TMS, a treatment for severe depression. The department said he spent the proceeds on luxuries including a casino-themed party and a $100,000 gold-plated Tesla Cybertruck.
A jury found Curry guilty of three counts each of health care fraud, offering or paying illegal kickbacks, and monetary transactions involving criminally derived property. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 10 years.
