A Miami Beach committee approved Ken Griffin’s proposed private heliport as part of an already approved marina, despite nearby condo residents’ noise concerns. The full city commission still must approve the helipad; its next meeting is not for another two months.
Griffin’s attorney said the proposed site would be more convenient than the current landing spot, about 2.5 miles west. Studies commissioned by Griffin estimated that helicopter noise on nearby condo balconies would be no louder than normal conversation; residents at the hearing disputed the assurances.
Commissioner Joseph Magazine urged Griffin to use the roughly two-month wait before the full commission meeting to win residents’ support rather than lobby commissioners.
