Jose Iglesias credits Mets’ ‘OMG’ with helping him reach Broadway

Former New York Mets shortstop Jose Iglesias is starring as the Narrator in Broadway’s “Buena Vista Social Club,” where he sings and dances. His six-week run has been extended through Nov. 15, offering a chance to reconnect with Mets fans.

Inspired by true events in Havana, the musical follows the acclaimed Cuban group’s reunion to record its Grammy-winning 1997 album. Iglesias says he is the first to speak onstage and has a few speaking lines in the production.

Iglesias said teammate J.D. Martinez encouraged him to play his then-unreleased song “OMG” for the Mets. The team played it in the clubhouse during a hot streak, and players sang it after home runs; it became an unofficial anthem, complete with an “OMG” dugout sign. Iglesias said the song and his involvement in music helped lead to the Broadway opportunity.
