Glassdoor Senior Economist Daniel Zhao says millennials’ job anxiety is rising as they enter peak earning years. A figure raised in the interview puts at nearly 70% the share of millennials who delayed a major milestone, such as buying a home, because of career uncertainty.

The interviewer said millennials make up 35% of the labor force; Zhao said they also form the largest share of managers. He linked their anxiety to middle-management roles and companies’ focus on productivity and talk of trimming management layers.

Zhao described side hustles, skill-building and networking as “stability stacking”—ways to build a safety net against possible layoffs. He said Glassdoor data showed especially severe burnout among millennial women, which he linked to parenting pressures and social expectations that women bear more of parenthood’s costs.
