Jeju’s Seogwipo city has suspended night visits to Cheonjiyeon Falls through the end of September after a man in his 50s died following a fall into its pool, reportedly while taking photos. Police are investigating how he fell.
Local media reported that he fell about 2m into the pool at 8:32pm Saturday, while the site was open to visitors. Jeju’s fire and safety headquarters said rescuers performed CPR; he was pulled from the water in cardiac arrest about 10 minutes after the fall and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Police are reviewing CCTV and witness statements and considering an autopsy. It remains unknown whether he fell from the normal viewing route or entered a restricted area, or whether any fault in the facilities or their management contributed. The city says it will consider safety upgrades and whether to resume night opening once police findings are available.
