James Copenhaver, one of three attendees shot at Donald Trump’s July 13, 2024, campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died at 76, the House Republican Conference announced Sept. 24. He was shot twice and suffered serious injuries.
A bullet struck Copenhaver in the triceps; another damaged his colon and kidney and left him with nerve damage, CBS Pittsburgh reported. He was released from the hospital about a week later. Later reporting said bullet fragments remained in his body, and his lawsuit said he underwent multiple surgeries.
Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne, sued the United States earlier this year. Their complaint alleges negligence by the Secret Service, including failures in security planning, communication and securing the building from which the gunman fired. It sought more than $150,000; the case remained pending in federal court in Pittsburgh as of Sept. 24.
