Nexterity is developing a battery-powered, remote-controlled robot that fits around pipes and loosens or tightens four flange bolts at a time. Founder Lindsey Elliott says it targets strenuous work linked to many pipefitters’ injuries, amid a labor shortage.
The robot can slide along a pipe once attached. Nexterity has made configurations for different standard pipe sizes, each small enough for one worker to carry in a Pelican case. The startup’s business model is to rent the robots like construction equipment.
Elliott said conversations with pipefitters and industry groups led her to say that 80% of pipes are 2–8 inches in diameter, a recurring size range she sees as well suited to automation. She said similar piping is used in industries including water treatment, food and beverage, mining, nuclear and sustainable manufacturing.
