J.J. Spaun missed Brandt Snedeker’s U.S. Presidents Cup team despite finishing 10th in qualifying; four players below him were selected. After his Ryder Cup debut, Spaun said he would rather make the winning putt for his country than win another major.
Spaun’s omission drew renewed scrutiny after he won the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour. He said his call with Snedeker lasted 45 seconds; his absence from the Tour Championship had initially led to speculation that injury was a factor.
Speaking to Trey Wingo, Spaun said he had not understood the Ryder Cup’s intensity until he played. He said watching Shane Lowry hole the crucial putt left him wishing the United States had won, and described a team victory as shared with teammates, families, fans and the country.
