Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani faced criticism after saying a hypothetical bride in a longer skirt was the safer choice for a “good mother.” He said he had been misunderstood; female politicians responded with miniskirt photos.
In a Sept. 18 speech, Tajani contrasted a “charming” and flashy hypothetical bride with a “serious” woman in a longer skirt, saying the latter was a safer bet for a “good mother” who would bring stability to the home and family.
On Sept. 21, Tajani said he had been misunderstood and had never intended to offend women. The next day, Senator Simona Flavia Malpezzi posted a photo of herself and nine other female senators in miniskirts; Turin Mayor Chiara Appendino posted her own and asked whether he considered her reliable or a “good mother.” Italian Bishops Conference head Giuseppe Baturi said words and looks directed at women should be filled with respect and admiration.
