Teacher Hannah Jorgensen, 24, and student Ahmed Osman, 10, drowned on a School of the Wild trip at Lake MacBride State Park on Sept. 22. The Iowa City district said it canceled program trips for the foreseeable future and will make counselors available to students and staff.
The district said the outing was for Borlaug Elementary fifth graders at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said the drowning occurred at Lake MacBride State Park near the Coralville Reservoir spillway.
The School of the Wild program says it works with teachers from 98 schools in 44 Iowa counties. Its stated aim is to expand outdoor learning for elementary and middle-school students.
