ICE arrested Kentucky State basketball player Aminata Seck, 26, at Louisville airport on Aug. 7 as she prepared to fly with her team to a New York tournament. She remains listed on a Kentucky detention-center roster; DHS says she is receiving hospital care.
DHS said Seck legally entered the United States in September 2019 and later overstayed, and that an immigration judge ordered her removed last year after she failed to appear at a hearing. Her attorney, Sadiqa Reynolds, said Seck entered on a student visa and may have missed a visa deadline while having back surgery; Reynolds also said Seck has an ACL injury.
Reynolds said Seck told her she remained in significant pain after being transferred among multiple detention facilities before going to the hospital. Democratic Rep. Morgan McGarvey said he was monitoring Seck’s situation and others detained in Kentucky. Kentucky State declined to comment, citing privacy.
