Green Oceans says it found a wreck near Block Island, Rhode Island, believed to be the F/V Mistress, which sank on New Year’s Day 2019, killing two fishermen. The nonprofit also reported what may be human remains; the vessel has not been formally identified.
Green Oceans said the wreck lies in about 92 feet of water, 50 feet from the base of Block Island Wind Farm turbine No. 1. Its team cited the propeller and shaft, fuel tanks, net-drum deck hatch and processing equipment as evidence pointing to the F/V Mistress.
The Coast Guard closed the 2019 case without finding the boat and later labeled it lost, according to Green Oceans. The nonprofit says it sent evidence to the Coast Guard, the National Transportation Safety Board and Rhode Island officials, asked federal authorities to secure the wreck for forensic analysis, and urged the Interior Department to open an interagency investigation, including into mariner safety in waters crowded with turbines.
