LePaul Warren, a 17-year-old Westbury High senior, died after being shot outside the Houston school on Sept. 25. Police arrested a 17-year-old male suspect that evening; it was not clear whether he had been charged.
Police responded at about 8:21 a.m. local time. Chief J. Noe Diaz said officials were told that words were exchanged among a group of young people before someone produced a handgun. Police said the suspect allegedly fled. Officers recovered a weapon when they arrested him, but Diaz said it was not known whether it was used in the shooting. Diaz said the suspect was not enrolled in Houston ISD and was eligible to be charged as an adult.
Westbury canceled its Sept. 25 homecoming dance and a game scheduled for the following day. The Houston Independent School District said it was providing counseling and additional support to students and staff.
