Hillsborough County says it will dismiss a lien of more than $23,000 on a 91-year-old Florida man’s home. His daughter, Terri Bashoor, found the lien in a title search as she tried to sell the home; it grew from two false-alarm charges totaling $150, which she has paid.
Bashoor told WFLA the home’s security system triggered the alarms in error in August and September 2022; the original charges were $50 and $100. The county says its violation notice was returned as “unclaimed” and “unable to forward.” A special magistrate ordered payment within 30 days in May 2023. After the deadline passed, the county began adding $20 a day on June 12, 2023.
The county says it will not waive all fees, citing the property’s history of false alarms dating to 2020. Bashoor says she cannot afford the remaining amount.
