Heather Perez is seeking $100,000 for an acre, fencing and shelters to establish a permanent home for the 50–70 stray cats she cares for in Charleston, S.C. She hopes to move them by winter; her fundraiser had raised more than $26,100 at publication.
For two years, Perez has fed the colony twice daily, provided shelter and medical care, arranged spaying and neutering, and found homes for some friendly cats. Its current site is temporary.
Charleston Animal Society reported more than 8,000 homeless cats in the county in 2025, while its shelter has capacity for 300. Perez is looking in North Charleston and also considering Hollywood and Ravenel. Society CEO Joe Elmore says a move needs a committed caretaker, steady food and water, veterinary care, shelter and a carefully managed acclimation period; otherwise, cats may try to return, get lost or face reduced chances of survival.
