Hayley Kiyoko said her dream project is a lesbian pirate show or movie, describing it as “Keira Knightley, but gay” and “very gay and fantastical.” She shared the idea Thursday at a Beverly Hills panel on queer media that raised money for Outfest.
Kiyoko made her directorial debut earlier this year with “Girls Like Girls,” based on her novel and song of the same name. She said financing came through only after she wrote the novel and it became a bestseller. She also hopes to adapt her second novel, “Where There’s Room for Us,” a period piece she said is difficult to get funded.
Other panelists shared screen projects they hope to make. Adam Shankman wants to adapt the musical “Spring Awakening,” though he doubts its intense subject matter will get approval. Wash Westmoreland hopes to adapt “The Glamour Boys,” a book about queer British MPs who rallied against Nazi Germany, while Angela Robinson is trying to develop her 2004 film “D.E.B.S.” as a TV series.
