Harvey Weinstein received 15 years in New York Wednesday after a jury convicted him of sexually assaulting Mimi Haley in 2006. He maintains his innocence; the AP says a pending California resentencing could keep him in prison for life.
A New York appeals court overturned Weinstein’s 2020 conviction and 23-year sentence in 2024, finding that the judge had prejudiced the case by allowing testimony about allegations outside the charges and permitting questions about uncharged allegations if Weinstein testified. Haley described the assault’s effects as lasting and devastating in court.
Weinstein has served more than six years in New York, leaving about nine years on that term. Separately, he received a 16-year California sentence in 2023 for a 2013 rape. A California appeals panel denied his appeal effort but ordered resentencing, which remains pending; the trial judge ruled the California term cannot run concurrently with the New York sentence. Weinstein’s publicist said he intends to seek review by the California Supreme Court.
