Hannah Einbinder and Susan Sarandon were among those detained at a Sept. 24 New York City protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s U.N. speech. It was unclear whether they were arrested or only detained.
Photos showing them being led away in handcuffs circulated online before Netanyahu began speaking. A Land Palestine post claimed they were chanting “arrest Netanyahu”; Variety said it had contacted the NYPD and the actors’ representatives for more information.
Both actors have publicly criticized Israeli politics and expressed support for Palestine. At Cannes, Einbinder said the cost of not speaking out was greater than the potential career impact; Sarandon said at Venice her career had been affected and that agencies were still telling people not to hire her.
