Kenny Chesney says his mother used to cut Greylan James’ hair when James was a child in East Tennessee. James, now a songwriter for Chesney, will join him on the 2027 Original Vibe Room Tour, alongside Sheryl Crow and Eric Church.
Chesney said James’ parents brought him to his mother, who worked cutting hair for years. At a musical event hosted by a mutual friend in Knoxville, James’ father asked Chesney for a photo with his son and said the boy was learning guitar. Chesney estimated James was no more than 6 and said he still has the picture; James has it too.
James wrote Chesney’s 2020 hit “Happy Does.” In a Sept. 15 Instagram post, he recalled asking Chesney for advice as a child and being told to stay in school and learn to write songs. The stadium tour supports Chesney’s latest album, Silver Sands Marina.
