Schnell said Trump had urged Republicans to treat him as though he were on the ballot, but described his polling as record-low and the party’s strategies as failing. Some candidates who had accepted his support and often spoken up for him were already distancing themselves; Axios reporter Kate Santaliz said more might do so in the next five weeks, particularly over issues such as the Iran war.
