Five fishermen rescued a 3- to 4-day-old elephant calf from India’s Teesta River on Sept. 21 after it was swept nearly three miles downstream. Forest officials found its mother several miles upstream, and the two were reunited about two hours later.
The fishermen spotted the calf struggling and hauled it onto their boat before forest officials arrived; three swam alongside the boat. After the reunion, the mother accepted the calf and began nursing it, and they later rejoined the herd.
