Everton Under-21s earned the National League Cup’s extra point by beating unbeaten Boreham Wood 4-2 on penalties Wednesday, after a late spot-kick forced a 1-1 draw; Omari Benjamin had put the visitors ahead in the 73rd minute.
Benjamin scored after a move featuring goalkeeper George Pickford’s precise low pass, Cieran Loney’s hold-up play and Harvey Foster’s run and pass. Foster hit the bar in the shootout; Benjamin, Loney, Gardner and Carrington scored. Boreham Wood hit the bar once, and Pickford saved another kick.
It was Everton U21s’ second win over National League opposition this season. Foster had been sent off for a second yellow card in a recent 0-0 league draw at Reading. He was eligible for the cup match but will miss the league game on October 16.
