Drumcree parade set for first Garvaghy Road march since 1997

The Orange Order’s Drumcree parade is due to pass along Portadown’s mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road for the first time since 1997, after the High Court upheld approval for a march limited to 35 participants and with no bands.

The march is scheduled to begin at 08:00 BST and last no more than 90 minutes. It will travel from Portadown town centre to Drumcree church, then return via Garvaghy Road.

The Orange Order says the road is part of its traditional route; many Catholic residents oppose the parade. A dispute over the march in the 1990s sparked some of Northern Ireland’s most serious disorder and led to the creation of the Parades Commission.
