Gaza ministry reports 74,016 Palestinian deaths in Israel-Hamas war

Gaza’s Health Ministry says 74,016 Palestinians have been killed and 175,068 wounded in the Israel-Hamas war. It says 1,145 Palestinians have died since the Oct. 10 ceasefire took effect; seven Israeli soldiers have also been killed since then.

The ministry is part of the Hamas-led government and does not distinguish civilians from militants; it says women and children make up about half the toll. U.N. agencies and international organizations have viewed its detailed records as generally reliable.

The ceasefire halted the heaviest fighting, but Israeli strikes have continued; Israel’s military says they are responses to threats or attacks. Other parts of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire remain largely stalled: Israeli forces control over half of the Palestinian territory, Hamas has not disarmed, a new Palestinian government has not arrived, and reconstruction has not begun. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israeli forces will not withdraw until Hamas disarms.
