DreamWorks’ animated adventure “Forgotten Island” stood at a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score from 54 reviews as of Thursday morning, ahead of Thursday previews and its Friday nationwide opening. Its audience score and critics’ consensus are still pending.
The film follows lifelong friends Jo (voiced by H.E.R.) and Raissa (Liza Soberano), whose college plans are taking them in different directions. On their last night together, they find a portal to Nakali, an island populated by creatures from Filipino family stories; the way home comes at the cost of their shared memories.
Several critics praised the film’s energy and use of Filipino mythology, while Frank Scheck, David Ehrlich and Alfonso Duralde noted that its convoluted or busy plot can obscure the central friendship. All three still gave it a “fresh” rating. Directors Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado previously made “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” which had a 95% critics’ score from 196 reviews.
