Costa Rican President Laura Fernandez immediately dismissed Foreign Minister Manuel Tovar after he attended a Tuesday Trump-led security meeting without notifying her, which the government said prevented her from participating.
The government said Tovar's negligence caused significant strategic damage. Indiana Trejos, currently Costa Rica's foreign trade minister, was named acting foreign minister and will assume the role after returning from a mission to the UN General Assembly.
The meeting was part of the Shield of the Americas, a U.S.-led coalition launched by the Trump administration in March to combat drug trafficking and organized crime. Several right-wing Latin American presidents attended. Costa Rica's government described the coalition as fundamental to the country's national and public security policy.
